Guatemalan water advocate Bernardo Caal in Geneva

Guatemalan indigenous Q’eqchi’ leader and water rights defender Bernardo Caal Xol is in Geneva to participate in a forum on Guatemalan human rights, as part of a European tour.

Caal Xol is finding a new voice after being released from prison in 2022. Although, Caal Xol is facing a new trial against him in his native Guatemala.

The activist was imprisoned after defending the rights of Maya communities affected by a hydroelectric project on the Cahabón river, considered sacred by the Mayas.

International Peace Brigades, PBI, a Swiss non-governmental organization that promotes human rights in Latin America among other corners of the world, is hosting Caal Xol and two of his compatriots, Lourdes Gómez Willis and Luis Haroldo Pacheco Gutiérrez, in a public forum on Tuesday, March 6 at 18:45 at the Université Ouvrière de Genève.
