Switzerland: Mild earthquake shakes the heart of the Valais

SWITZERLAND – A 3.1 Richter scale earthquake was recorded today at 02:13 in canton Valais, said the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zurich (see map at left in red).

The quake was centered 5km north of Sierre at a depth of 3m.

Two small aftershocks of 1.2 and 1.3 followed at 04:55 and 05:13.

No damages or injuries were recorded.

The Valais is well known for its seismic activity. While several small quakes have taken place near Sierre and Valais in the past few months, this has been the strongest one so far this year.
