GENEVA, Switzerland – Spending New Year’s Eve in Geneva and not wanting to celebrate it at home? Here’s what’s on —and free— during the last eve of 2014 on the streets of Geneva.

The 2014-2015 celebration will consist of not one but three large popular fêtes or reveillons, plus several smaller ones in neighborhoods around the city, each with its own “theme.”


Jonction — Palladium and adjoining square — From 18:00-3:00 — Theme: “a magical atmosphere built around water”

Featuring: DJs, food and drink stalls. In addition, a free masked ball will take place at the Palladium.

The jazz band Big Bang Dardagny Russin will play from 22:00-24:00, then it is up to DJs to entertain the crowd until 3:00.


Sécheron — Rue du Valais — From 13:30-3:00 — Theme: Sports and Families

Starting at 13:30 the Rue du Valais – not far from the UN – is closed to traffic. A roller blade track and fair stands will be set under the bridge, many of them for kids.

From 18:30-20:00 music by the Black Lions; DJs and dancing from 21:00.


Vieusseux – Parc des Franchises — New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day — Theme: Generations and Cultures

On 31 December, starting at 15:00 kids activities, sports, food and drink stalls. DJs begin the evening at 19:00 concluding at 3:00.

On 1 January at the park, a karaoke-brunch under a giant tent.


New Year’s Eve Solidarity Ball — 19:30-2:00 — Plainpalais Community Centre

Created for those who live alone, older persons or families in need, it takes place at the Plainpalais Community Centre.

Food and music and other fun activities are offered by volunteers to all who attend. Free entry. Click here for more information.


Firefighters midnight soup — At the municipal firefighters’ headquarters in Vieux-Billard

Warm soup for those reveling outdoors at the Caserne du Vieux-Billard at midnight.


Bains de Pâquis — Fire and Music — Starting at 20:30

City Mayor Sami Kanaan, kicks off the festivities at the Bains de Paquis at 20:30. DJs, dancing, theatre/circus and a fire show are also planned. RSVP required for the circus/theatre performance (022 738 1616).

The Compagnie Carabosse will light up its art installation and DJs will set the night on fire.

Cirque de Noel & Luna Park in Plainpalais — starting at 14:00 to 3:00

The traditional Christmas Circus and the amusement rides fair known as Luna Park, take over the Plainpalais plaza. The Circus offers a possibility for dinner and a show, while Luna Park keeps the cotton candy flowing and the rides open until 3:00.


Fireworks by the Kempinski Hotel

Last not but not least, fireworks by the harbor across the Kempinski Hotel.

For the past several years the Kempinski has offered a small but beautiful pyrotechnic show at midnight.

Genevois and tourists meet for impromptu gatherings at the quai de Mont-Blanc.. bring the champagne!


 

Nez Rouge taxi serviceDon’t drink and drive! If you “have one too many”  call the Nez Rouge – a driver will happily drive you home for free.
