BERN, Switzerland – The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health has issued an alert after an increase in reported cases of influenza (flu).
According to newly published statistics the number of medical cases in the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais is increasing, with widespread cases reported in the north and east of the country (see chart).

The World Health Organization says “Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection and severe outcomes caused by influenza viruses.”
While most infected people recover within two weeks, infection can lead to “severe complications of an underlying condition, pneumonia and death on the very young, the elderly, and those with other serious medical conditions.”
The Swiss are also promoting vaccination to prevent the spread of further contamination, especially among children four and under, who are currently the most affected.
