GENEVA, Switzerland – The Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights has developed an iPhone application for those interested in international disarmament treaties.
The Academy, part of the University of Geneva, developed the app which describes the technical characteristics of the weapon in question, say anti-personnel mines, cluster munitions, light arms and even weapons of mass destruction and their impact on the human body.
The point of the app is not just raising awareness of the terrible devastation caused by these weapons, many of which are forbidden nationally and internationally, but also the international laws that regulate or ban their use.
This is of course relevant as Geneva is at the heart of several successful disarmament treaties including the 1997 Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, represented by the iconic three-legged chair in Place des Nations.
The app costs CHF10.
