GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – ‘Tis the season for long eves and outdoor movies. If you are new to Geneva and are often bugged down by its high-cost of living and lack of “things to do”, fear no more. In spring and summer, Geneva offers a plethora of free events including outdoor movies.
In June the fun takes place at Grottes, with the Cinémobile de pré en bulle, which includes a small bar and movie screenings. The series of events include dinner and music. Head to Grottes plaza at 20:00 for dinner. Films, mostly old French classics, are shown after sundown.
Then from 10 July to 17 August the city sponsors free films at the Perle du Lac Park with Cine Transat on the shores of Lake Geneva.
The fest is known for its relaxed atmosphere, large crowds and kid-friendly movies. Bring your picnic and sit by the lawn to enjoy the sunset and a movie. I recommend the thematic evenings where moviegoers dress up according to the film. Fun. Fun. Fun.
From 25 July to 24 August, telecomms giant Orange, sponsors a series of modern, outdoor films at the Port Noir in Geneva and other cities across Switzerland. Films are not free and unlike the two previous events, this one is a more “upscale” affair.
The Bains de Paquis also hosts a week of thematic “southern hemisphere” films from 19 to 23 August.
Happy watching!
