Teenager killed after struck by tram in Geneva

GENEVA, Switzerland – A teenage boy was struck and killed today at around 17:00, by a TPG tram near the popular Pickwick Bar on Rue de Lausanne, not far from the Cornavin train station in Geneva.

According to the Geneva police spokesperson, the young man, born in 1998, wearing headsets “and seemingly not paying attention,” might not have seen the tram coming as he stepped right onto the tracks. The driver blew the horn but could not stop the tram on time.

The teen was killed instantly, but his body remained trapped under the tram for about an hour.

Due to the fatal accident both lines of the tram lines were closed and traffic diverted between Avenue de France and the train station, until 20:30.

The tram driver and some witnesses were being treated by psychologists.

News of the accident quickly spread through Twitter where people expressed their sadness, while others posted photos of the rescue efforts.

This is the second fatal accident in canton Geneva this year.
