GENEVA, Switzerland – More than 40 residents of two buildings in Petit-Saconnex in canton Geneva had to be evacuated after a fire broke out early in the morning.
The fire which occurred at 54 chemin des Coudriers, at around 06:30 today, also affected the building next door.
A witness told Léman Bleu TV that he and his family had to be evacuated through a balcony. Firefighters confirmed that there were 20 ladder rescues.
A city spokesperson said at least 13 people had to be taken to hospitals to be treated for smoke inhalation with three of them seriously affected by the toxic fumes.
Twenty-six more were treated at the scene.
Authorities say the cause of the blaze is still unknown.
Meanwhile, on Friday 7 October, another fire took place in the Libellules area (near Lignon/Charmilles). According to authorities, more than 20 professional and volunteer firefighters from Vernier in 12 vehicles were needed to control the fire.
Two persons were treated for smoke inhalation.
