GENEVA – The Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, has just unveiled a video that uses some of the same rhetoric used by governments when launching attacks: “we will not falter”, “we will fight fire with fire”… albeit, for very different reasons.
The video, “Victory by Any Means”, calls on parties in conflict to respect the Geneva Conventions which seek to protect civilians and prisoners of war. In 2016, several hospitals and aid convoys were attacked but no parties have been prosecuted in international courts.
“Every State around the world has signed up to the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit attacks on medical facilities, torture and the mistreatment of prisoners. Those with the power to make such practices stop have a legal duty to do so,” said Helen Durham, said ICRC Director of international law and policy in a written press statement.
