GENEVA, Switzerland — More than a dozen firefighters responded to a fire that broke out on the top floor and roof of the Hôtel At Home on rue de Monthoux in the Paquis, Monday afternoon (see the dramatic video here).
Firefighters told local TV station LemanBleu, that the roof and top floor were completely destroyed and other floors were damaged. Even though flames were shooting through the roof, fire officials were able to prevent the fire from spreading or damaging adjacent buildings.
No injuries were reported as the hotel was closed while undergoing renovations. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Geneva police closed off several streets including Rue de Neuchatel, Monthoux and Fribourg all the way to the Cygnes mall next to the train station for more than six hours affecting the evening commute.
The massive plume of smoke which could be seen from miles away was captured by several social media users.
The Tribune de Genève and witnesses reported that several vehicles parked in the zone had been damaged due to falling debris.
Alain Bittar who runs the Librairie arabe l’olivier, in the same street, broadcast the fire live as it occurred.
The city of Geneva has been plagued by an unusual number of fires this year, including two fatal fires that occurred within hours of each other this past January.
