Geneva Police: Pedestrian killed when elderly driver jumps curb

In separate incidents: pedestrian is injured in hit-and-run, police searching for driver who hit an 11-year-old

GENEVA, Switzerland — A 69-year-old man was killed on Saturday 13 May while walking near Geneva’s city hall, in the heart of the old city.

A 77-year-old driver was riding through Rue Henri-Fazy, when for an unknown reason, hit a row of bikes and scooters parked on the left-hand side of the street. The driver then hit the victim as he walked towards the promenade of La Treille just a few steps away, where the vehicle came to rest.

A police spokesperson told Swiss television RTS, that it was still not clear how the accident had occurred.“In old town, the streets are rather narrow and it is difficult to gain speed, so far, the accident seems incomprehensible,” he said.

Passersby offered first aid to the victim but the man died on the scene.

A psychologist was brought on to provide counseling to witnesses and those who provided aid to the dying man.

The streets were closed for investigation until 22:00.

It is not yet known if, or what kind of charges will be filed in this, the fourth fatal road accident in the canton.

Pedestrian struck in hit-and-run by learner driver

Earlier in the week a 34-year-old learner driver caused bodily harm to a pedestrian when he too, jumped a sidewalk.

The incident occurred in the corner of chemin Barde and route du Bois-des-Frères in Lignon on 10 May.

According to police, the unsupervised learner driver was making a left turn when he ended on the sidewalk injuring the passerby.

The driver then left the scene of the accident but was tracked down by police with help of several witnesses.

He was detained at his house for failing to stop and render aid, and breaching his learner’s permit by driving without a supervising driver.


Call for witnesses: Child hit by car near school

Police are still looking for the driver responsible for hitting an 11-year-old boy on a zebra crossing outside the En-Sauvy School in Lancy.

The incident occurred on 2 May, around 17:00, when the unknown driver of a small black car was traveling north on the Avenue du Curé-Baud towards the 1 August Plaza.

Following the crash, the driver took the child home and drove off without reporting the accident or waiting for police to arrive.

The boy was taken to hospital by his parents, where he was diagnosed with abdominal injuries.
