GENEVA — In the next few days those in Switzerland owning a Mercedes diesel bought in the past six years, will receive a letter informing them of a voluntary recall and offering a service upgrade after reports of harmful emissions. 

More than 23,000 Mercedes were sold in Switzerland alone in 2016 indicated LeTemps, making it the third most popular in sales after VW and BMW.

The measures will be taken for nearly all EU5 and EU6 vehicles in Europe for which Daimler will assume all costs.

“The public debate about diesel engines is creating uncertainty – especially for our customers. We have therefore decided on additional measures to reassure drivers of diesel cars and to strengthen confidence in diesel technology,” read part of a Daimler statement quoting Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Daimler Chairman and Head of Mercedes-Benz.

This is the latest in the emissions tests saga that involves over 11 million vehicles worldwide. Express UK reports Volvo will stop making diesel cars in 2019 while France is to ban sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

Volkswagen recall

VW is also set to recall some 22,000 cars in Switzerland to fix problems with ABS anti-lock braking and EPS electronic steering systems, reported Swissinfo earlier this month. It is expected that 180,000 VW vehicles in Switzerland are also affected by the emissions scandal that hit the company in 2015.
