GENEVA, Switzerland – Not the rain, a missed penalty, or the mighty Irish fans and their songs could stop the Nati (Swiss National Team) from winning against Ireland in Geneva. The Nati continues unbeaten at home –a feat since 2014– and keeps the Euro hopes alive.
After a loss to Denmark, Switzerland needed a win to maintain their chances to qualify for the Euro2020 cup. It was a strong performance for the red team which scored its first goal at the 16th minute courtesy of Haris Seferović.
It was a busy night for Irish goalkeeper Darren Randolph — undoubtedly the star player for better part of the game. Randolph cleverly stopped a penalty by Swiss Ricardo Rodriguez in the second half but could do nothing but watch as fellow Boy in Green Captain Shane Duffy turned the ball into the Irish net sealing their fate in the last seconds of the three minute extension.
Cédric Genève on YouTube captured the Swiss fans cheering on as the Nati stays alive in these qualifiers. Irish Duffy will miss the next game after picking up a yellow card which may spell trouble as Ireland must beat Denmark in their final game to qualify.
